I was invited to attend opening night of the show on Wednesday evening, and it was nothing short of magical. The audience clearly agreed. The show played to a packed house (filled with little girls in tiaras and ballgowns), and wrapped up with rousing
applause and cheers.I'm a huge fan of Broadway musicals, and in high school, this is one of many that we performed. I say "we" - though I was actually part of the backstage crew. I was way too shy to perform on stage (nor did I have the talent!), however I worked on sets and did makeup for many shows from 6th grade on up. It has been more than 20 years now, but I still remember every lyric to "Ten Minutes Ago" and "In My Own Little Corner." Oh how I love Rodgers and Hammerstein!
didn't realize, however, that until 2013, Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella had never been performed on Broadway! Cinderella was written for television, debuting in 1957 starring Julie Andrews. In 1997, a new television remake aired on ABC starring Brandy as Cinderella, Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother, Bernadette Peters as the Stepmother, Whoopi Goldberg as the Queen and Jason Alexander as Lionel.
The show was performed at theaters regionally, but it wasn't until 2013 that it made its debut on Broadway, featuring a new book by Douglas Carter Beane, giving it a more contemporary feel, and offering some surprising twists! It received 9 Tony nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical (even though it was technically new to Broadway).
The sets are stunning - from the moment you sit and before the performance begins, you know you are in for a treat. The costumes are colorful and beautiful - I don't have one of the dress Cinderella wears at the end of the show - because that's a surprise. Bring your binoculars/ opera glasses if you can get a closer look.
William Ivey Long won the Tony Award for Costume Design for Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella. Just wait for the "oohs and ahs" when Cinderella twirls around, and magically her rags become dazzling ballgowns. HOW did they do that? You'll be spellbound.
Rodgers + Hammerstein's CINDERELLA combines the story's classic elements – glass slippers, pumpkin, and a beautiful ball but modernizes the tale. More than just a pretty face with the right shoe size, this Cinderella is a contemporary figure living in a fairytale setting. She is a spirited young woman with savvy and soul who doesn't let her rags or her gowns trip her up in her quest for kindness, compassion and forgiveness. She longs to escape the drudgery of her work at home and instead work to make the world a better place. She not only fights for her own dreams, but forces the prince to open his eyes to the world around him and realize his dreams too.
I went to see the show with a girlfriend, but I'm sure my boys would have loved it. Take the family and get a jump start on the holiday season. You won't be disappointed.
