Don't Miss "Disney's The Little Mermaid" at the Fox

Broadway Musical is Playing at the Fox Theatre Through Jan. 15

January 13, 2017
One of the first big theatre shows I saw as a kid was "Peter Pan". I remember how amazing it was when Sandy Duncan "flew" out over the audience. That was a BIG deal in the early '80s! In Disney's The Little Mermaid (playing at the Fox Theatre through Sunday, Jan. 15), much of the show features actors harnessed with ropes and wires to create the illusion of them swimming underwater. It's an amazing feat, and I give the actors a lot of credit for being able to keep it up for two hours. It's also very believable. Add to it the Disney music we know and love ("Part of Your World", "Under The Sea" "Kiss The Girl"), and a few new songs, like the hilarious "Les Poissons" number, and this is a show Disney lovers really shouldn't miss.  i haven't even mentioned the colors and the costumes - or those amazing electric eels! What else can I say? It's Disney! This is a perfect way to introduce young children to the magic of Broadway. There are definitely a few scary moments with Ursula, the sea witch. Even my nine-year-old jumped out of his seat at one point. But I didn't hear any cries or see any tears - so I think your little ones will be okay.

If you can't remember the story, in a magical kingdom fathoms below, we meet Ariel, the little mermaid who is tired of flipping her fins and longs to be part of the fascinating world on dry land. Joining her are Sebastian, Ariel’s crabby sidekick; Ursula, the evil sea witch; Triton, King of the Sea and the handsome and human Prince Eric. Based on the Disney animated film, the show features all of the favorite songs like “Under The Sea” and “Part of Your World” as well as new songs written by Oscar-winning Disney composer Alan Menken, the mastermind behind productions such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Pocahontas. Lyrics are by Howard Ashman and Glen Staler and book by Doug Wright.
