Ring That Bell - A Simpler Summer

Buckhead Midtown Brookhaven Macaroni Kid - Your Weekly Events & Activities Newsletter

July 11, 2014
Earlier this week a friend posted a photo on Facebook of a pile of kids' bikes in front of one house. It was titled "Before cellphones and social networks, this is how we figured out where our friends were."

For the last three weeks we've basically been camping out at our new home in East Cobb, while our furniture sits in our Smyrna home awaiting the "official move."  We've got airbeds on the floor, suitcases lying about, boxes everywhere. But for the most part, I've enjoyed this carefree living.

The pile of bikes is actually a thing of reality in this neighborhood. Our street must have no less than 15 boys aged 6-12. And at any given point during the day, they are all at one house or another, if not outside.  I was concerned about leaving the only house/neighborhood my boys have ever known. But people promised me that kids adjust. And they were right. The first week we were here, my new neighbor said to me, "They're slipping in like fish to water."

Trying to locate the boys when I actually do want them back has been challenging. I walk down the street knocking on doors and checking out trampolines, guessing as to where they might be (sometimes there are bikes...). So this week I spent some quality time browsing at Queen of Hearts Antiques in Marietta - and found the bell pictured above. My neighbor has one. She rings it at dinnertime and bedtime.  Now that I have a competing bell, I have to come up with a kind of Morse code to lure my own children home.

Our TV/cable was installed, but it's been on very little (that's something for us). When the microwave died I resorted to warming coffee in a pot on the stove, and reheating restaurant leftovers in a skillet (God forbid!).

The kids have enjoyed playing chess and checkers on their new screened porch, from which I can also see the basketball hoop and the cornhole game we set up in the backyard...soon to be followed by horseshoes.

The swing my father hooked up for us under the deck is an ultimate spot to relax and enjoy a lemonade (this evening mango-flavored, courtesy of Mike's). And the newly-fixed hot-tub may be where you'll find me nightly. Sure, eventually the wireless TV and stereo might make it outside, and the kids will find a way to resume playing video games, despite their X-Box possibly "overheating" since the move. We'll install the new microwave, even though we determined the old one is somehow hooked up to the hot tub breaker - lose power to one, loser power to both (so really, it's not broken at all). Go figure. And we'll have to get our furniture in here and really unpack - turn this camp zone into a long-term home.  But for the short term, we're keeping things simple. And during the summer, what more could you really want?

I hope you get to enjoy a simple summer - moving is by no means all fun and games. And while I may live in Cobb County, I'm always up to speed on what's happening in town - but doesn't hesitate to email me at michellesisco@macaronikid.com with more events! Now go chase some fireflies...

PS (and no joke...) I just found my kid:
