REVIEW: Shipt On-Demand Grocery Delivery Service

By Michelle Sisco, Publisher - Buckhead Midtown Brookhaven Macaroni Kid April 22, 2016
My husband has been out of town for work this week, and I've had my hands fuller than usual (single parents, you amaze me!). We've had doctor and dentist appointments, baseball, piano practice, karate - and of course school testing, which just wrapped up, thank goodness!  On top of that, Passover is Friday, and I'm having a group of ten at my house for a seder. That means I need to clean AND do a lot of cooking, on top of the other activities we have going on. Did I mention the sick dogs and poison ivy?

Wednesday I got a little anxious. The added guests for Passover meant I needed more food. I definitely did not have enough brisket (or makings for the brisket). And I needed more matzoh meal and matzoh too!  There's always a run on these items at the grocery leading up to Passover. So if you don't get them early enough, good luck finding them -  expect the shelves to be cleared! And you can't have Passover without matzoh. Or, in my opinion, brisket either.

I REALLY did not have time to go to the grocery store on Wednesday. A handyman was coming to work on some projects around the house. We had a baseball game set for early in the evening and a piano recital to rehearse for. And I had to start cleaning up the house for Friday as well. But that brisket would have to go in the oven on Thursday morning. What was I to do?

Enter Shipt, an on-demand grocery delivery service (and a lifesaver for busy moms!). Sometimes you just don't have that hour (or two) to go to the grocery store. I was offered the opportunity to try out Shipt and review their services, and the timing couldn't have been better.

Shipt puts the entire grocery store right in the palm of your hand. Download the app, select your items, choose your delivery window (as soon as an hour after your order) and you're done. A Shipt shopper will hand-select your items and deliver them to your front door. That's right - a personal grocery shopper!

Shipt makes finding items easy too. Browse through pre-selected categories like "Healthy Eating" or "Rainy Day" - or simply use the search option to find what you're looking for. Can't find your caramel almond milk coffee creamer? Submit a special request. No problem.

On that Wednesday morning, I decided it was the perfect time to get some help from Shipt. I took out my phone, went to the Shipt app, and saw that brisket was on sale! I added a 2.5 pound brisket to my cart (to go with what I had at home), plus the additional onions and potatoes I needed to cook it. Then I put in a special request for Matzoh ball soup mix and matzoh, and browsed the sale section to see what else was available. I finished my order, and requested delivery for 1pm to 2pm.

At about 12:30pm, I received a message that "Sara C." was shopping for my groceries, along with a photo of her. Shortly thereafter I received a text from Sara as well, letting me know she was at the store in case I had any additional requests.

At 1:30pm, Sara arrived at my house, arms full of groceries from Publix. And most importantly, she had my freshly cut brisket. Awesome. (She also let me know that indeed, there was only one left!)

Shortly thereafter, I received an email from Shipt with my final, itemized receipt (which also gave me the opportunity to tip Sara).

I restocked the fridge and pantry, finished my work for the day, and was able to get the kids to their baseball game on time. I now didn't have to worry about taking them to the grocery at 8pm after the game ... it was already done. And I could start cooking Thursday morning!

A note about coupons and prices:
I'm an avid couponer and while I was initially disappointed that I was not able to use coupons with Shipt, I was happy to find their SALE tab and really like bargain shopping from there. This service is about convenience...obviously, if you want to have a personal shopper, you have to make a few financial sacrifices! So, save your coupons for your next grocery trip and enjoy the time you've saved.

I may not be able to use Shipt every time I need to shop for groceries, but I'm certain I'll be using the service when saving time is on the top of my "to do" list!
