Troubadour is Now Playing at The Alliance Theatre! Teen Tickets Available for Just $10!

In 1950s Nashville Country music legend Billy Mason is on the eve of retirement. Can his soft-spoken son, Joe, step into the spotlight and carry on? When Joe joins forces with an unlikely pair—Inez, a budding singer/songwriter, and Izzy, a rodeo tailor on a mission—a revolution is born and Country music is changed forever. This feel-good romantic comedy by Atlanta’s Janece Shaffer (The Geller Girls) with original music by Sugarland’s Kristian Bush is a world-premiere production not to be missed. It runs on the Alliance Stage select dates through February 12, 2017.

I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Opening Night performance of Troubadour on Wednesday. Everything about this show is wonderful. It's been 24 hours already, and I still can't get the music out of my head. From gorgeous ballads, to songs that will have you wanting to get up and dance - if you like country music (new or traditional), then you really need to get your tickets to Troubadour.

At some moments you'll feel like you're taking in a concert at a honky tonk bar or even at the Ryman Auditorium. And then there are the funny, and sometimes very serious moments, to remind you that this is actually a play. Characters don't spontaneously break out in song like in most musicals. All their performances are actually performances. Troubadour includes 16 original songs by Atlanta-based singer-songwriter Kristian Bush, whose career as a solo artist (2015’s critically-acclaimed "Southern Gravity") as well as one-half of beloved duos Billy Pilgrim and Sugarland has spanned more than two decades.

Check out production trailer below for a sneak peek, featuring a preview of some of the music. Unfortunately I don't know the actual names of most of the songs, because they aren't listed out in the program (and I've been searching online to no avail)! All I can say is that as soon as a soundtrack comes out, or any of the songs become available for download, I'm buying. (Hear that Kristian Bush?)

The show's cast is phenomenal. It's hard to pick a standout - everyone offers something a little different. Country music fans will be excited to see Radney Foster on stage as Billy Mason. Fans of NBC's "The Voice" (especially teenaged girls, I'm sure), will be thrilled when Marietta's own Zach Seabaugh takes the stage. Alliance Theatre-going veterans will recognize Andrew Benator, Rob Lawhon and Bethany Anne Lind. As much as I love the show's music, Benator's portrayal of Izzy just might be the show-stealer. Nashville-based singer-songwriter and actor Sylvie Davidson has such a gorgeous voice - a little modern, a little Patsy Cline.
