Tiny Doors ATL Releases Learning Lesson Plan for All Grades

August 21, 2020

The Atlanta-based public art institution Tiny Doors ATL released a community-focused remote learning lesson plan inclusive of all grades K-12. Karen Anderson Singer, the artist known as Tiny Doors ATL, and KIPP WAYS Academy primary school art educator, Kyra Sampson, collaborated to develop and implement the teacher-accredited lesson plan that meets National Core Art Standards. The art project, which requires a single material, is being made available for free to any educator in the world who would like to share the lesson with their students.

The duo asks students to create a chalk drawing depicting a door and other familiar elements in their neighborhoods. Because in-person schooling may be difficult this autumn, it was important to Singer and Sampson to create an accessible, inclusive, low-cost art lesson that challenges students to engage with their home communities and immediate surroundings. “Tiny Doors ATL is a project about community and accessibility. It’s so important that every student has access to art this Fall, no matter where they’re learning,” explains Singer.

The lesson plan is featured on the Tiny Doors ATL website and is free for anyone to implement in their classroom, whether it’s on-campus or at home. Students are encouraged to share their work and use the hashtag #tinydoorsatl (with permission of course).  To view or download the lesson plan: http://tiny.cc/TinyDoorsATLforStudents
