Students are back in school in person and mask-wearing is a requirement for several districts. During the first week of school, we noticed our daughter developed rashes on her face, around the area that is covered by her mask. At first, we thought it was an allergic reaction. After a quick call to our pediatrician's office, we found out she developed "maskne". Basically, it's acne-like breakouts from wearing a mask all day long. It's a common issue that they have received calls about at their office. So here are some tips they gave us that helped.

  • Choose a properly fitting mask that fits across the nose and side of the face and chin. Make sure that it is not too tight and the material is not irritating the skin.
  • Change masks frequently throughout the day. We pack spare masks in the backpack to change after lunch or when needed.
  • Cleanse your face frequently and use moisturizer to reduce dryness. Pack wipes and travel-size moisturizer or lotion.
  • Wash any cloth masks as germs can transfer from your mask to your face.
  • Skip the make-up and avoid skincare products that may irritate your skin or clog pores.
  • Take mask breaks.
