Tuesday night we had our first family "holiday" outing of the season, attending the latest Broadway in Atlanta show to play at The Fox, A Christmas Story: The Musical. Based on the now classic 1983 movie (perhaps you've caught the annual 24-hour marathon Christmas Eve on TBS), the stage version is a lively remake, certain to please adults and kids of all ages.

All nine-year-old Ralphie Parker wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder® carbine 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle (BB gun). Unfortunately whenever he mentions it, he's told, "You’ll shoot your eye out kid!”  So Ralphie must spend the 25 days leading up to Christmas scheming ways to make his dream of owning a Red Ryder a reality. An infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish.

If you're familiar with the movie, then you'll get some good laughs out of the musical take on Mr. Parker's "major award" - the infamous leg lamp. "Ralphie to the Rescue" is an imagined hero sequence - just what MIGHT happen if Ralphie did own the Red Ryder. "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out" is a musical dance number featuring the teacher, Mrs. Shields, and her "students" - including one incredibly impressive tap dancer who had the entire audience cheering.

I brought my 9 and 11-year-old boys to the show, and both thoroughly enjoyed it. Ironically my 11-year-old has been requesting a new BB gun. (He's been a little relentless too - just like Ralphie.) I suspect he'll use this show as ammunition to get his way (no pun intended - well, maybe a little one).
