StinkyKids The Musical - Now Playing in Midtown!

Local Author’s Work Comes Home in Regional Premiere at Synchronicity Theatre

By Michelle Sisco February 27, 2015
I was invited to attend the regional premiere of StinkyKids the Musical on February 13th at Synchronicity Theatre’s brand new home at Peachtree Pointe in Midtown. It seemed like a perfect opportunity to have a "Valentine's Day" date with my 7-year-old, so we headed to dinner first at Flip Burger (nutella milkshakes - on fire!), and then with full bellies, made our way over to the venue for the big opening night.

Though I'd read about the play (and book on which it was based), I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I'll admit I was surprised that the show featured adult actors portraying children. So many of the plays I've taken the kids to lately feature child actors. I know Jack thought it was funny to see these grown-ups dressed up like six-year-old kids!

Synchronicity Theatre’s StinkyKids the Musical marks the regional premiere of the adaptation of local author/ Morningside resident Britt Menzies’ award-winning StinkyKids series. The musical debuted in New York City in 2012, winning the 2012 Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best Family Show, an experience Menzies calls, “one of my greatest successes during the journey of creating StinkyKids." Since the production’s success in New York, one of Menzies’ goals has been, “to ensure that my hometown of Atlanta would be able to enjoy the musical and share this special event with my family and I.”  Last Friday, the theatre was completely filled - and many of Menzies' excited friends and family were present, making this night a particularly special affair.

So - what IS StinkyKids The Musical about? In short - has your child ever done something he/she thought was SO bad that they simply could NOT tell you..even though it was clear you'd figure it out? The answer is probably yes. And more often than not, the crime really isn't that terrible. But for a five or six-year-old, getting in trouble with mom and dad is ALWAYS scary.

In this story, Britt, who really NEVER gets in trouble, falls asleep chewing gum - a big no no - and wakes up with a wad of gum stuck in her long, curly locks. She's afraid if she tells her parents then they might cancel a big outing she has planned with her friends that day - to the new Captain Happy’s Jumpy Fun Super Bouncy Indoor Place
. And she knows her friends will be so mad - but even worse, disappointed in her. As her friends discover what has happened, they try to devise a plan to save the day. Can Britt and her friends get out of this sticky situation and learn to be “leaders of good” ?

My kids never have gotten gum stuck in their hair (I know I have) - but they did both give themselves some pretty awful, unexpected haircuts when they were "younger". Drew, who had beautiful blonde hair, ended up having to get a crew cut after he practically scalped himself! Jack just had a hole over his forehead for a few months. He tried to cut his bangs. And he definitely cut them - all of them off squarely!  I'll admit I WAS mad. And disappointed. And we discussed how haircuts would be handled in the future. Now, I don't think any of their friends cared a bit. Just this mom. Who was sad. But, there were other occasions when things went bad and "big events" - like a trip to a local bouncy place - had to be canceled as a result. I'm thinking likely it involved brothers hitting each other. But I digress.

The musical, running only 60 minutes with an intermission, is charming and definitely fun for little kids. Bigger "kids" may relate as well. The venue is very family-friendly, so bring your young kids and let them experience the theatre! And if they enjoy the music, well you can even buy the brand new CD on site, featuring the local cast! (You can also purchase books and other StinkyKids merchandise on site or on the website HERE.)

After the show, we were able to take some pictures - Jack was being shy and didn't want a photo with the cast, so here he is with the banner to himself.

We were also lucky to be able to enjoy a post show, opening night reception - and despite our still-full bellies, we chowed down on delicious dumplings and egg rolls from Doc Chey's, not to mention cupcakes (see photo) and LOADS of candy. We definitely got the VIP treatment! Jack got a copy of StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors and a t-shirt too!
